The Niger State government has said there were plans to criminalizing cutting down of Shea butter trees in the state.
Thus move became necessary following the incessant cutting down of the economical tree which has threatened the existence of the tree.
Niger State is the largest producer of Shea butter. Currently, the Nigerian government is putting plans in place in how to utilize the potentions of Shea butter.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Niger State, Dr Ibrahim Garba Musa while speaking at the just concluded National Council on 3and Rural Development, said investors had disclosed interested on Shea butter processing in the state.
“We have some investors that are going into Shea butter production and value addition, we are also encouraging it, already, 10,000 hectares of land in Zone A is being concessioned to investor on Shea butter Development.
“We are already doing something about Shea butter and we are also proposing and which we will put into effect very soon that cutting of Shea butter tree is a crime in Nigeria State so that we can also enhance the development of the Shea butter trees”, he said.
